Polish Olympic Dresses

Last week, we saw the beautiful dresses and other uniforms of the Polish team during the opening ceremony.  Several women, myself included, have been gushing over how beautiful the dresses were.

I asked the Polish Embassy on Twitter.  By the way, do you follow them?  You should. 

Here's what they found out.  Apparently, quite a few others have been inquiring about the dresses.

The article on RFM24 is in Polish.  You can use Google Translate to get the gist of the information.  The dress is designed by Poland's Ranita Sobańska.

I decided to check on the 4F website, since that is the company who made the uniforms.  They have the dress!

The price is 249PLN, which converts to roughly $75USD.  However, it looks like according to their website, they don't offer shipping to the USA at this time.  I will find out and let you know.

After all, I also want one for myself.

Some of Polish American News This Week

A few things are happening this week.

2012 Summer Olympics

In just a couple of hours, the 2012 Summer Olympics start in London, England.  Poland will be represented with 220 athletes.  Included, the women's tennis star Agnieszka Radwanska, rated the 2nd best women's tennis player in the world.

Syria

As of a few minutes ago, Poland closed it's Embassy in Damascus, Syria.  The Embassy has been helping U.S. citizens there the past few months after the U.S. Embassy closed.

 

Polish Ambassador

After serving for four and a half years at the Washington, D.C. Embassy for the Republic of Poland, Robert Kupiecki is stepping down.  The June/July newsletter for the Polish Embassy has his farewell letter, great photos, and other interesting stories to share.  Mr. Ambassador, I wish you success in your next endeavors.

 

Joanna Krupa

Poland's Joanna Krupa will be on The Real Housewives of Miami this season.

Romney

If you follow my facebook page, you will know Romney is set to visit Poland on his trip to Europe.  I'm not sure what will come of his visit, but here is some information of what happened this week during Romney's visit to England.  Based on that and his possible comment of having "strong Anglo-Saxon roots" (remember, Poland is not, nor ever has been Anglo-Saxon), I'm going to be watching the news stories from Romney's visit to Poland in anticipated discomfort.  I don't know what or who could go wrong, but I don't know that it could go smoothly either.

 

New Theme Park in Poland

Check out the new theme park set to open outside of Warsaw in 2014.  The waterpark is supposed to become Poland' largest theme park and will be called Adventure World Warsaw.

Easter Cake - Mazurek Krolewski

If you are looking for an Easter cake recipe to make this year, please check out the Embassy of Poland, Washington DC's Easter newsletter for my recipe and many other useful stories.

The recipe is a bit time consuming but well worth it.  Easter in Polish culture is traditionally about the coming of Christ, the end of Lent and fasting, the coming of Spring and all the celebration this entails.

A Mazurek Krolewski (pronounced Mah-zur-ehk Krool-ev-skee) is typically made with almonds and decorated with chocolate, jams, berries, various nuts, powdered sugar, whatever your family enjoys.

I topped our Mazurek this year with a chocolate glaze, royal icing, sliced strawberries and crushed hazelnuts.

As I was preparing to decorate it, my six year old informed me that the theme for this year's cake was "April Showers bring May Showers" and I went from there.  Typically, I decorate with a raspberry jam, powdered sugar, raspberries and dots of chocolate glaze, but I love having my children involved in cooking and keeping them excited about a tradition.

Since my 2 year old ate some of the decorated cake, we will be decorating another one for Easter.

I thought today I would share a few fun links I've found online.



The first is The Embassy of Poland in DC's first ever Social Media contest.

Go to Do You Know Polska?, check out some of the polish slang words featured there, come up with a sentence using one (it can be written in English with just the word in Polish or, if you want to, write the entire sentence in Polish), and either email to:  washington.press@msz.gov.pl or tweet to @PolishEmbassyUS.  Easy!

The prize is a newly published book about Maria Sklodowska-Curie.

Today is the last day to enter!  Also, this is their first social media contest ever, so let's show support by spreading the word.

I also found a forum online in Polish about Baby wearing, called Chusty.  In Poland, baby wearing gear is called a Nosidełka or a Chusta, depending on whether it is a carrier or a fabric carrier (scarf).

Another site in Polish (use Google Translate button or try reading what you can, practice your Polish reading skills!) with older photos of babywearing in Poland from Chustomania.pl.

I found a website called World Memory Project and wanted to share it.  Some of you are sharing or looking for your family history and I thought this would be a good tool. 

 

And just to lighten things up a bit, I thought I would share a couple of videos. 

The first is a song my kids sing constantly.  A Ja Wole Moja Mame.  This video has the words and is sung by Edyta Gorniak instead of the original Majka Jeżowska.






The second was playing in Poland on our honeymoon.  My husband hates pop music but it got stuck in his head and we went searching for the video.  Warning:  It's not exactly Sesame Street.
